The Old Flambeau Trail in this County ran between their northern summer grounds on Lake Superior to their winter ground in Wisconsin.  -  The first Europeans to explore this area in the1600s were Etienne Brulé, Përe René Menard, Fathers Jacques Marquette and Claude Allouez, with French voyageurs and fur traders. Some of the larger lakes are Gogebic Lake, Cisco Chain of Lakes, and Lac Vieux Desert.
