This parcel is the last remaining property in the Styvestant family estate and it has never been offered for sale before. Tranquillity Farms was originally owned by Peter Stuyvesant in the late 1600's. They used the farm to raise game and host hunts for aristocrats, such as Theodore Roosevelt. They also owned a large flock of prize-winning sheep and a small dairy herd. Named in 1787, for Mrs John Rutherfurd who on arriving from New York stepped out of her carriage and remarked with a contented sigh, "this indeed is tranquility". It sat on a 5,000-acre estate and was tripled in size to a mansion of 65-rooms by Rutherfurd Stuyvesant (1843-1909) who filled it with his collection of antiques and notably old armor. The Rutherfurd-Stuyvesant Estate included a large mansion and many outbuildings. The mansion was decorated with imported furniture, Ming Dynasty pottery, and suits of armor. In 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited his friend, Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, at the estate in his private train car, the Ferdinand Magellan. In the 1960s, The State of New Jersey purchased the estate to build Route 80. The land became part of Allamuchy Mountain State Park in the 1970s.
