FOLLY CASTLE C. 1763.  Folly Castle was thought to be completed in 1763 and is arguably one of the most historically significant structures in Petersburg.  It was built by Peter Jones, II, who was the grandson of the city’s founder and namesake. In the 1700's, large dwellings were often referred to as castles.  Because Peter was a young bachelor and childless, it was considered a folly to build such a large house...hence the name Folly Castle.
