Povos once had the status of town, parish and municipality headquarters, through the charter grantedby Sancho I in 1195. It enjoyed great economic vigor throughout the 13th and 14th centuries, but it would gradually lose its importance in favor of the municipality of Vila Franca. The municipality was extinguished and integrated into the current one on November 6, 1836.It is one of the main heritage centers in the municipality and houses the grounds of the Vila Franca de Xira Hospital at one of its ends.
