Next to the Guadiana River and close to the border, in Alandroal you can feel the tranquility and enjoy calm days next to Lago do Alqueva.

It is said that the name originated from a plant known as alandro or aloander, a type of shrub that was abundant in these lands. The town was founded in 1298, during the reign of D. Dinis, by the military order of Avis, certainly due to its strategic importance in the defense of the territory.

The Castelo do Alandroal, the Castelo de Terena and the Fortaleza de Juromenha formed a defensive triangle that was important over the centuries, in particular during the Wars of Restoration of Portugal´s independence, in the 17th century.
