Nuno lvares Pereira, who built the first house and a chapel on his land, which belonged to the order of Santiago. This was probably the reason why they called him Santiago. Official censuses up to 1828 indicate that its population was 40 dwellings and 112 inhabitants. By 1836 it had more than 1, 200 inhabitants. Later they added the name (of the Escoural), taking this idea from the abrasions of the ores, discovered in its surroundings. It is protected by the Serra do Monfurado, with all the agglomeration of rare species on the verge of extinction. Its heritage is the cave with parietal art. From Neanderthal Man from the Middle Paleolithic (about 50, 000 years ago) to the Late Neolithic (Homo Sapiens Sapiens), discovered in 1960, it is unique in Europe. In Escoural there is also the Interpretive Center of the Grotto, Mother Church, Dolmen of Nossa Senhora do Livramento, Chapel of So Joo Baptista and So Brissos, Convent of Nossa Senhora do Castelo das covas infernais de Monte Furado, Quinta da Torre do Carvalhal and Quinta de Nossa Senhora do Rosrio.It is a land with a very strong history and traditions, with an affable population and with the greatest advantage of being close to the city of vora and 40 minutes from Lisbon.
