The village of Sanfins do Douro (also parish seat) is located in the Alto Douro Region, on the back of a hill, approximately two kilometers from the bank of the river Pinhão, 7 km from the county seat and about 40 km from the seat of District.

Its geographical location is on the limits of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes "São Os Fins Do Douro".

In the past, Sanfins do Douro lived mainly from the cultivation of cereals, cattle, olive growing and wine production, having also explored tungsten mines. Currently, only Port, Moscatel and Table wine (main activity) and olive oil are produced.

The first Orago was that of Sta. Margarida, later a chapel was built on top of the hill dedicated to Sta. Bárbara (1640?) and later, at the end of the 18th century, the Nossa Senhora da Piedade whose pilgrimage is still celebrated today. Every year, around the 2nd Sunday of August, the pilgrimage takes place in honor of Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

It is not known whether the founder of the largest Brazilian city São Paulo, by the Jesuit Fr. Manuel da Nóbrega, was born or not in this locality. In the parish seats there is no record of a Nóbrega until the 17th century. However, historians recognize that he was probably born in Sanfins do Douro, having erected a statue inaugurated with pomp and circumstance by the President of the Republic in commemoration of the five hundredth anniversary of his birth.
