Salir is a parish in the municipality of Loulé. This agricultural colony was elevated to a town in 1993.
It is very likely that the area was inhabited by Celts and Romans, although there is not much evidence to prove this. Salir itself was occupied by the Moors in the 12th Century when Salir Castle was built to protect the southern Algarve from Christian reconquest. 

Agricultural production in this region includes cork, locust beans, figs, and almonds. The medronho liquor distilled from the strawberry trees is a very popular digestive. Hunting is an important activity and the area's restaurants specialize in various types of stews.
