FÁTIMA
Located 130 km from Lisbon, Fátima also nicknamed the "City of Peace", is Portugal's most important Marian shrine. Between 1916 and 1917, in a climate of war and turmoil of the early twentieth century and World War I, three children tending their flocks in the Cova da Iria experienced manifestations of the Mother of God and an angel. The apparitions of Our Lady occurred on the 13th day of each month between May and October 1917. There her great message of peace was transmitted to the world by the three children through faith and devotion to Our Lady and the prayer of the Rosary. Several thousand people witnessed the incredible "Miracle of the Sun" during the Virgin's last apparition on October 13, 1917.
The Little Chapel of the Apparitions was erected precisely on this sacred spot and houses the image of Our Lady of Fatima. In the huge square around it is the Basilica with the tombs of the three voyagers and the new Church of the Holy Trinity. Several popes have visited Fatima throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. In 2017, one hundred years after the first apparition, Pope Francisco canonized Jacinta and Francisco, two of the Fatima voyagers.

SALINAS
The salt pans of Rio Maior have eight centuries of history. In 1177, Pêro d'Aragão and his wife Sancha Soares sold to the Templars "the fifth part of the well and salt pans. This document, which is the oldest known to Rio Maior, is archived at the Torre do Tombo, in Lisbon.
