This parish is one of the oldest in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, with its settlement beginning shortly after the discovery of the island, which is witnessed by the construction of its church, which probably dates back to the end of the 15th century. In 1522, it already had its third vicar. Maia was one of the places on the north coast of So Miguel that developed most quickly, a hundred years after its foundation it was already a parish. Regarding its built heritage, there are some buildings worth mentioning. Its Parish Church, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, dates from 1812. It originated in a 16th century chapel, expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. Solar do Lalm, a noble house renovated in the 19th century, with a chapel and gate from the 18th century, is a beautiful example of Azorean architecture. In the place of Gorreana, so called because in the beginning a man nicknamed the Gorreana or Ana's cap lived there, there are tea plantations that are unique in Europe. In the century-old Fbrica de Ch Gorreana, this appreciated infusion is prepared from the various species cultivated there.
