Its origins lie in the Roman city of Illiabum.

The municipality was granted a charter by King Dinis on 13 October 1296 and was elevated to a town on 13 July 1990


The town is famous for its Vista Alegre porcelain industry. The municipality of Ílhavo comprises two towns: Gafanha da Nazaré and Ílhavo. In the municipality of Ílhavo, in the town of Barra, there is the Barra lighthouse, the highest of Portugal's 48 maritime lighthouses. The Barra lighthouse and beach are part of the parish of Gafanha da Nazaré. Costa Nova do Prado is part of the parish of Gafanha da Encarnação. Costa Nova do Prado beach is also one of the municipality's places of excellence and a must-see for anyone passing through the area. The typical houses on this beach (known as Palheiros) are characterised by their façades (originally made of wood, now made of concrete), listed in bright, cheerful colours, alternating with white. The city of Ílhavo is also known for its famous Pão de Vale de Ílhavo, made in the town of Vale de Ílhavo by hand and baked in a wood-fired oven. Pão de Vale de Ílhavo is best known as Pada, but there is also Folar or Pão Doce (with or without eggs), sold at Easter time.
