Ilha de Santa Maria, Azores

The island of Santa Maria is part of the Eastern Group of the Azores archipelago, a 20-minute flight from So Miguel island. It was the first island in the Azores to be formed, featuring a geological wealth of volcanic and sedimentary rocks, and countless fossils of marine organisms. Santa Maria was also the first island to be discovered by Portuguese navigators, today counting 5400 residents (2021). Santa Maria is different from the other islands of the Azores. As the archipelagos most southern and eastern island, this makes it slightly warmer. The climate is Spring-like throughout the year with temperatures between 15 and 25 (it varies a little, but not much, in the summer and winter months), with summer being the ideal time to enjoy the beaches.In recent years, tourism has been increasing, with the island known for its white sand beaches, turquoise waters, natural pools, caves, and unique landscapes.
