The ancient Roman city of Conímbriga is one of the richest archaeological sites in Portugal.

One of the richest archaeological sites in Portugal, Conímbriga had its origin in a Celtic castle of the Conii tribe, at the end of the Iron Age. Occupied by the Romans from 139 BC and its population totally Romanised, it was under the emperor Augustus, in the 2nd century AD, that the city reached its splendour, with the construction of public baths and a Forum, a reconstruction of which can be seen in the museum.

With the decline of the Empire in the end of the 4th century, a monumental defensive wall was raised, which did not prevent the assault of the city by the Suevi, in 468 and the consequent decline of Conímbriga, which became deserted and the remaining inhabitants moved to Condeixa-a-Velha, further north.

The great excavations carried out during the 20th century revealed a complex and valuable site. The visitor will not fail to be amazed at the sight of the noble houses that preserve magnificent floors in polychrome mosaics, standing out the house of Cantaber, a typical residence of the III century and one of the largest in the whole western Roman world and the house of Repuxos, with an area of 569 m2 paved with mosaic, ornamented with showy pictures illustrating mythological and daily themes, where a central gardened peristyle with water games makes it unique.
