Viana do Castelo is one of the most beautiful cities in northern Portugal, with a strong connection to the sea. From Viana do Castelo you can quickly reach Porto or Spain. From the Santa Luzia hill and the Sagrado Coração de Jesus temple, you can see the privileged geographical location of the city, near the sea and the Lima river mouth. Walking through some of the streets of the historic centre, you will reach the Praça da República, the heart of the city. Here you will find the 15th century Misericórdia building and fountain, as well as the old Town Hall. Not far from there is the Romanesque Cathedral or Mother Church. Facing the sea that made Viana's history, a baroque church houses the image of Senhora da Agonia, a devotion of the fishermen. She goes out every year on August 20 to bless the sea in one of the most colourful festivals in Portugal, where it is worth mentioning the richness of the typical costumes that parade in the festivities, showing the beauty of the golden filigree. On the outskirts of the city, you can take a walk along the coastal or river cycle path or along one of the many marked trails, but you can also go surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing and bodyboarding on the fine golden sandy beaches. You can also jet-ski, sail, row or canoe on the Lima river.
