The parish of Calhetas is approximately 11.4 kilometers from the city of Ponta Delgada and 9.1 kilometers from the seat of the municipality to which it belongs, the city of Ribeira Grande. The name of this parish comes from the reefs and other calhetas rocks or pebbles that stand out on its seafront.Gaspar Frutuoso described it like this: From Rabo de Peixe to a third of a league, there are some calhetas on some points and stone reefs, in which It takes a lot of cast net fish and there is good fishing. The exact details of its settlement are not known, however, it is believed that it dates back to the 15th century. It was elevated to a parish in 1924. The parish church of this parish, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem, acquired its current appearance in 1830, when the original church became too small. Calhetas celebrates its patron saint on the fourth Sunday of September. Another building of interest in the parish is the monastery of Nossa Senhora das Mercs. This building, from the 20th century, houses the Poor Clare sisters who dedicate themselves to contemplation and pious work.
