Benavente:
In 1199, the settlement of foreign settlers on the south bank of the Tagus led to the emergence of the village of Benavente. Located on the limits of the Castle of Coruche, subordinated to the Order of Calatrava, it was constituted under the aegis and lordship of this Military Order. In this fact, the name of the village has also been associated, it is known that the Castle of Benavente, in the Kingdom of León, also belonged to the same Order. Benavente, located between Santarém and Lisbon, is bordered by the river Sorraia, one of the main tributaries of the Tagus and was the second municipality established south of this river. It has an old charter, given by D. Paio, or Pelágio, master of the Military Order of Évora, on March 25, 1200 and confirmed by D. Sancho I. D. Manuel grants it a new charter on January 16, 1516. In addition, he received privileges from several monarchs, especially D. Dinis and D. Fernando.
Benavente, allows us to define a consolidated historic centre, since the entire area is well delimited by the river Sorraia, to the east and by the so-called lezíria dos cavalos, on the west side. Its historic centre takes on a triangular shape, with the Cruzeiro do Calvário being located at one of the corners and in the centre, the place where the old Mother Church once stood, destroyed by the earthquake of 1909.
The town of Benavente has been developing in a southerly direction, extending over the lands that were once well delimited by the river were designated as vineyards and olive groves. Benavente is the seat of the municipality and Local Instance Section of the District of Santarém. In religious terms, it belongs to the Archdiocese of Évora.
Currently the municipality of Benavente comprises four parishes: Barrosa, Benavente, Samora Correia and Santo Estêvão, the population of the municipality, according to the 2011 census, is 29 388 inhabitants. The area of the municipality is 521.46 Km2.
