The origin of Arrifes goes back to the time when the city of Ponta Delgada was extending in all directions, through the construction of new houses, thus giving rise to new housing nuclei.
To the northwest, this phenomenon gave rise to the Curate of Our Lady of Health in 1719 and to the Parish and Parish of Arrifes in 1833.
Its point of origin was Piedade, where João Dias Caridade settled.
Later, Health became the center of the population, and therefore elevated to a parish, because it was easier to acquire land for housing in this area. Also because large and influential families emerge in the midst: Afonsos, Arrudas, Benevides, Coutos... which, in the same line of ideas, gave rise to the Miracles, which in 1959 was elevated to the category of Parish.
Originally, the Arrifes were one of the favorite places for the nobility and wealthy bourgeois of Ponta Delgada to have their farms and summer houses. Some old buildings, property deeds and the survival of some members of these families are proof of this.
It is the largest parish in the municipality of Ponta Delgada and the second largest in the Azores. It is organized by three parishes: the east Piedade, the west Saúde and the middle Carreira dos Milagres. The main activity is agriculture, and this parish is the largest dairy basin in the Azores. In this area there are also dairy and dairy products factories.
