Alverca was the seat of a medieval municipality extinct in 1855. Although it is a municipality without a charter, there are three letters of confirmation: one from D. Pedro I confirming the privileges of the municipality on 24 August 1357 the letter dated 19 April 1434, from D. Duarte, confirming the privileges and good customs and another issued on 23 April 1439,  where King Afonso V confirms to the town of Alverca all the privileges, graces and mercies. The small municipality was formed by the parishes of Alverca, Sobralinho and Santa Iria de Azóia. It was elevated to city status on August 9, 1990. It was the first locality to be elevated to the category of city without being the seat of a municipality. Alverca is more populous than Vila Franca de Xira. Currently, the parish of Vila Franca de Xira disputes the possession of the mouchão do Lombo do Tejo.
Alverca is called a "green city" (due to the high number of green spaces and tree-lined streets). It is a major transit point for rail and automobiles.
