Alverca do Ribatejo, sometimes simply Alverca, is a city headquarters of the former Portuguese homonymous parish of the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, district of Lisbon.
It was elevated to city status on August 9, 1990, and was the first town to be elevated to city status without being the seat of a municipality.
It was united to the parish of Sobralinho, forming the Union of Parishes of Alverca do Ribatejo and Sobralinho with headquarters in Alverca do Ribatejo.
The city of Alverca is bordered to the Northeast by Sobralinho, to the Northwest by Calhandriz, to the West by Bucelas (in the municipality of Loures), to the South by Vialonga and Forte da Casa and to the East by the Tagus River.
Its patron saint is St. Peter.
Alverca was the seat of an extinct medieval municipality in 1855. Although it is a county without a charter, there are three letters of confirmation: that of D. Pedro I confirming the privileges of the county on August 24, 1357, the letter dated April 19, 1434, of D. Duarte, confirming the privileges and good customs and another issued on April 23, 1439,  where D. Afonso V confirms to the village of Alverca all the privileges, thanks and mercies. The small municipality was formed by the parishes of Alverca, Sobralinho and Santa Iria de Azóia.

Alverca is called a "green city" (due to the high number of green spaces and tree-lined streets). It is a major rail and car crossing point. The great attractions of the city are the Air Museum, the Municipal Museum - Núcleo de Alverca, the Manueline pillory in Largo João Mantas in the center of Alverca, the Church of São Pedro, the old Misericórdia and the Church of the Little Shepherds, which encloses the second largest carillon in Europe and the third largest in the world. There is also the Álvaro Vidal Garden, some views over the Tagus and Lezíria, rare in the Greater Lisbon area.

One of the characteristics of Alverca is its connection to the History of Portuguese Aviation, being considered as the cradle of aviation in Portugal. There was installed in 1919 the military airfield and the General Workshops of Aeronautical Material. It was also in Alverca that the first international airport Portuguese worked, called Campo Internacional de Aterragem, which served Lisbon until the inauguration of Portela Airport in 1940.

In the late 1980s, the operator Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses began a program to modernize signaling and traffic control systems on several railroads, especially the Northern Line. In 1990, the tender was opened for the 3As project, concerning the installation of new signalling equipment in part of the Northern Line, which covered the full track and several stations, including Alverca. Another objective of this modernization program was the renovation and partial quadrupling of the Northern Line, including the section from Braço de Prata to Alverca, and the reconstruction of this last station, in order to function as semiterminus. The modernization program continued after the formation in 1997 of the National Railway Network, an entity that had been created to manage the railway infrastructures, and which built the new Alverca station. In 2000, the 3500 two-storey automobiles began to circulate between Alverca and Cacém.
