It was the first capital of British East Africa, before Nairobi was elevated to capital city status in 1907. It now serves as the capital of Mombasa County. The town is known as 'the white and blue city' in Kenya.<br /><br />Mombasa (in Coast Province) is the second largest city in Kenya, lying on the Indian Ocean and is the host to the Coast Province administration. It has a major port and an international airport. The city is the centre of the coastal tourism industry.
