Walking along the ancient pavement that in medieval times connected Perugia with Arezzo and Florence, you reach the Mariottella Castle. The Castle, surrounded by centuries-old olive trees, was in medieval times a military outpost that guarded the narrow valley formed between Lake Trasimeno and the hills that overlook it to the north. The Castle, partly habitable and partly to be restored, still has some of its original features such as the cross vaults on the ground floor, imposing fireplaces and a single circular tower. From the Castle it is possible to enjoy a unique view of Lake Trasimeno. While enjoying absolute privacy, it is located less than a kilometer from the town of Tuoro sul Trasimeno. Tuoro sul Trasimeno is a small municipality on the north shore of the lake. It has been known since Roman times when on 21 June 217 Bc. It was the scene of a bloody battle between the Carthaginian army led by Hannibal and the Roman army led by Gaius Flaminius Nepos. The battle saw the Carthaginian army dominate and is remembered for being the first in history in which strategy was more important than the number of soldiers. Tuoro sul Trasimeno is today a tourist resort bordering other famous locations such as Passignano sul Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago and Cortona. It is located along the motorway link that connects Perugia to the A1 and the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts. Consequently the airports of Rome, Florence and Pisa are easily reachable.
