A small Gallura enclave in Anglona, northwestern Sardinia, five kilometers from the sea and 50 kilometers from Sassari, Santa Maria Coghinas rests, on a bank of the Coghinas river. Close to the hills that border a fertile valley where vineyards and artichokes are intensively cultivated, a few minutes from the Gulf of Asinara.
A thick blanket of Mediterranean scrub and cork covers the landscape around the Coghinas. Herons, ospreys, partridges and water turtles live here. A few steps from the village, where the river creates a loop, at the foot of a granite hill, emerge the thermal baths of Casteldoria, famous for therapeutic qualities since Roman times and today renowned spa. Today you will see the doria tower stand out from afar, well preserved, some stretches of the walls, the remains of a chapel and a cistern for the water supply dating back to Roman times. The ruins of the ancient village, which arose perhaps together with the fortress, also remain standing.
The village winds around the main road and consists mainly of small buildings of one and two floors characterized by cheerful pastel colors made and renovated over the years.
