Petrokefalo belongs to the Municipality of Heraklion of the Regional Unit of Heraklion according to the administrative division of Greece as formed by the "Kallikratis" program. It is located at the 16th kilometer of the road to Agios Myrons at an altitude of 340 meters.
For the first time the name of the village is found in notarial documents of the 13th century and in the records of the Ducal Archive of Khandaka. It is recorded with approximately the same current name (Petrokefalo or Petrokefala) in all censuses from 1577 until today.
The peculiarity of the shape of the hill on which it is built (it has the shape of a human head), is considered to have given the name of the village, or according to another version, the settlement was named so by its first settler, Petros, owner of the hill.
The village suffered the wrath of Engelados in 1856 (like many other villages in the region) and was completely destroyed, losing its beautiful older traditional architecture. It was quickly rebuilt with newer buildings that present very interesting architectural elements of the 19th century (Krasadaki house).
The patron saint of the village is the church of Panagia, which celebrates on September 8, when a festival with a good traditional feast is organized by the Educational Association of the village, which also develops various other cultural activities.
Characteristic of the settlement are the clear characteristics of a fortified (fortress) type. In the 1970s excavations carried out in the area found: a carved tomb with a bath-like urn, a sarcophagus and burial pithos.
