Eastern Mani, positioned 278 km from Athens (3,5 hours by car) and 71 km from Kalamata (1,5
hours by car), with the pretty coastal villages of Limeni, Neo Itilo and Gerolimenas, is now well
known for offering a more authentic holiday experience than many of the islands. The Diros
caves, a few minutes away by car from the town of Aeropoli, are extensive and spectacular, but
their unique selling point is that you explore them on a punt with your very own underworld
ferryman, with the stalactites reflecting in the crystal-clear water.
The traditional village of Limeni, with its fish taverns and magnificent rock houses exemplifies
with pure beauty the spirit of what there is to see when someone decides to go even further
and deeper into the area. There, someone will soon find himself descending the dramatic bluff
of Cavo Grosso, down to the pretty village of Gerolimenas, set round a pebble beach, while by
continuing south, the rocky peninsula starts to narrow leading to the village of Vathia, which
is perched high above the sea, full of magnificent 19th century towerhouses and positioned in
way that reminds us of a medieval phantasy.
The land piece is also close to the Western part of the Mani Region (25 km – 30 min by car),
where one has the opportunity to explore the beautiful coastal villages of Kardamili, Stoupa and
Agios Nikolaos as also the extraordinary beaches of kalogria, delfinia and foneas.
