ABOUT THE AREA Saint Germain du Salembre is on the east of the Forest of la Double and on the edge of the Salembre stream and the area is appreciated for its flora and fauna. Nearby is the Ferme du Parcot. This is a farm building built in 1841 in the traditional half-timber style and with a covered wooden verandah running the length of the house. It has been preserved as an eco museum and is a protected both as an historic site and as a picturesque site. It is set in a lovely woodland area, part of the Foret de la Double, with lakes and meadows. Dordogne is a department in southwest France, set between the Loire Valley and Pyrenees mountains. its known for prehistoric cave paintings in the Vezere Valley, like those in Lascaux Cave. The town of Perigueux is home to the Cathedrale St-Front, with its 5 domes, and the Vesunna Museum, built around Roman ruins. The medieval town Sarlat-la-Caneda centers on the Rue de la Republique and the Cathedrale St-Sacerdos. The heart of the 'Dordogne' area is, naturally, the department of the Dordogne, centered on its capital Perigueux: the French tend to refer to this area not as 'la Dordogne' but as 'le Perigord', and in France the area is most famous for its gourmet delights, notably pate de foie gras, walnuts and truffles. For tourists, the epicentre, indeed the epicurean centre, of this Dordogne is an area known as 'le Perigord noir', situated in the south east of the department. Centered on the town of Sarlat and the river Dordogne, this is the classic Dordogne, with its limestone cliffs, castles (such as Beynac or Castelnaud)
