Yet when you leave Avignon towards Nimes, just after crossing the Rhone, you see a small village clinging to the top of the steep slope. The old village of Les Angles is perched on the edge of a plateau overlooking the Rhone Valley.

The landscape and light of Les Angles inspired 20th-century painters, the most famous being Andre Derain, who painted several views of Les Angles in the 1920s. A 'painters' trail' has been set up to remind visitors of the special link between Les Angles and the art of painting. Painters include Andre Derain, Victor Crumiere, Frans Masereel, Alfred Lesbros, Marius Breuil, Zygmunt Waliszewski, Herbert Klingst, Fernand Deveze and Louis Montagne.
