A little history about Cattle farms and Haciendas in Costa Rica In 1561, the first cattle arrived to Costa Rica. Animals of European origin arrived from Honduras and Nicaragua, during the expedition led by the Spanish Conquistador Juan de Cavallón, for the purpose of feeding the Spanish settlements. They came first to Nicoya area, in Guanacaste Province, and then to Chomes area, in Puntarenas Province. Around these areas and the land surrounding the Gulf of Nicoya in Guanacaste, is where the first cattle herds of Costa Rica were established, given the drier area and presence of extensions of pasturelands. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the first cattle ranches or Haciendas were established, especially in Bagaces town (Guanacaste) and Esparza (Puntarenas) communities, primarily to export cattle byproducts to Panama. They were also established in the Central Valley, in the Province of San Jose, to feed larger populations groups of Costa Rica. In the 17th century, Guanacaste Province was still very inaccessible and difficult to develop, due to lack of roads and communication. During mid 18th century is when Guanacaste begins to develop a cattle production activity and the first Haciendas begin to appear, with the first official Hacienda registered in 1720 and in 1780s in Nicoya Peninsula. By early 1900s, with the introduction of the Zebu breed (Brahman and Nelore breeds) tolerant to dry areas, there were more than 40 haciendas in Guanacaste Province alone, feeding the increasing population of the central valley of Costa Rica. These breeds are the main cattle breed found in Costa Rican haciendas today. The Haciendas cowboy or Sabanero is an iconic figure in the collective memory of the haciendas in Costa Rica, particularly in Guanacaste region. Considered as the horseman of the savannas, he was the one who skillfully moved through the pastures and mountains, tending to the cattle of the haciendas. An expert rider, driver of endless and lonely roads, he summoned the cattle to the land, the corral, and the long cattle drives for sale to the central valley of Costa Rica. Haciendas in Costa Rica continue the tradition of cattle production, while others have evolved into agriculture for local and export consumption, forest plantations, and even tourism projects. These Hacienda tourism projects present not only the natural beauty of Costa Rica, but also the cultural traditions of the Costa Rican Hacienda. Costa Rica Luxury Living offers a unique selection of farms and historical haciendas for sale to continue this tradition and experience the life of these iconic properties.
