The community is strongly linked to the fate of the local Stahl Gerlafingen AG. The steel and rolling mill processes around 1 million tonnes of scrap metal annually into 650, 000 tonnes of concrete reinforcement products, mainly ribbed reinforcing steel. Currently, about 550 employees are employed in the steelworks, making it the largest employer in Gerlafingen.
