London Lakes is a world-class fly fishing estate in an untamed private wilderness at the heart of the Tasmanian central highlands. Set in splendid isolation and covering some 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) of freehold title, this protected pocket of Tasmania offers the seclusion and security of one of the world’s most pristine and remote natural environments. A coveted fly fishing destination, the estate has been host to fly fishing championships at both national and international level and is known the world over for its fish of exceptional condition with great sporting qualities. Set in the Central Highlands, known as the Lake Country of Tasmania, London Lakes offers the perfect location for an accessible wilderness retreat. In the geographic centre of Tasmania, it is a two hour drive from Hobart or Launceston and only three hours easy access from Melbourne. Lakes Lake Big Jim 935 acres (378 hectares) and Lake Samuel 563 acres (228 hectares) were created when the then Hydro Electric Commission began dam works in 1977-78. Top water levels took advantage of the varying topography creating many small bays and inlets that offer calm shelter for the angler. In the early 2000s, the highland stream that connects the two lakes was extended and completed, resulting in over 40 pools and pondages that meanders and runs to Lake Benjamin. Accommodation The Lodge Situated on the shores of Lake Samuel, the lodge is handcrafted from Tasmanian timbers and field stone and designed around a huge central stone fireplace that creates a warm and cosy atmosphere. Internal woodwork features exotic Tasmanian species. The Lodge comprises six bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms on the ground floor, together with dining area, parlour, breakfast room overlooking Lake Samuel, kitchen, pantry, laundry and rod room. On the first floor, two open plan areas are connected by a central walkway. These areas are currently used for two offices, library, fly tying areas and supplementary sleeping areas. There are also under-roof storage areas, each with separate doors, on the first floor for the amenity of frequent visitors to hold their fishing equipment and gear. Part of the Lodge, the rod room offers facilities for cleaning fish, a drinks refrigerator and water fountain as well as large storage areas for fishing equipment. Throughout the season, fly rods and waders are racked on the Lodge building. London Marshes Farmhouse The farmhouse on Lake Big Jim is a charming weatherboard building with expansive open decks within walking distance of the lake edge and perfect for outdoor dining. It has heating throughout, a superb open fire and stylish lounge seating with four bedrooms and two bathrooms. The farmhouse literally is a stone's throw from one of the estate’s best wading environments. From the front verandah, you can watch large, wild brown trout rising or tailing in Farmhouse Bay before strolling a hundred metres for sight fishing that is among the world’s very best.
