Widespread in sectors with drainage problems, they are not good agricultural soils, although they can be improved with adequate fertilization. The Order of Alfisols is characterized by a subsurface horizon of secondary clay enrichment, developed under conditions of acidity or sodium alkalinity, and associated with a clear surface horizon, generally poor in organic matter or of little thickness. Geographically, the Alfisols are closely associated with Mollisols. They are widely represented in the Chaco-Pampas plain. They generally occupy flat to concave areas, between higher portions of the landscape. According to Moscatelli & Pazos (2008) they often have a natric horizon (characterized by the presence of sodium) and/or a humidity regime called aquatic, because they remain saturated with water for prolonged periods. Alfisols are used for cattle grazing, as natural pastures or pastures tolerant to excess water and sodium, in fact, most of the country's Alfisols have evolved in conditions of impeded drainage. There are also Alfisols with lower base saturation than the Molisols, which are restricted to the northeast of the country where they occur associated with Oxisols and Ultisols.
